If you love music, then it’s impossible to avoid Migos, a trio from Lawrenceville, Georgia who are taking the music world by storm. The three rappers, Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff, took their name from the Georgia drug trade, which uses the word “migos” to signify an abandoned house suitable for the production of drugs. From these inauspicious beginnings, the trio have made a major impact on the worlds of hip-hop and pop music. Here is what you need to know about Migos.

1.The Rappers’ Names 

Quavo’s full name is Quavious Keyate Marshall. Offsett’s birth name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, and Takeoff’s real name is Kirshnik Khari Ball. Offset and Quavo are cousins, and Quavo is also Takeoff’s uncle. The tight-knit crew all grew up together in Lawrenceville, all raised by Quavo’s mother.

2. The Group Name

Migos is slang for an abandoned trap house where people can consume, make and sell drugs, but it is also a shorter version of the word amigos, which means friends.

3.Living at the Studio

Like many young musicians, Migos had to hustle. Shortly after they founded the band in 2009, they moved into the studio. They slept on reclining chairs and worked on the music all day.

4.They Were Football Players

While attending high school, Offset and Quavo were avid footballers, with Quavo actually acting as the starting quarterback. Offset, however, let his temper get the best of him, and he got sent away to military school.

5. Quavo is a Bernie Bro

Quavo was a huge supporter of Bernie Sanders, even recording a rap about Bernie. According to Rolling Stone’s interview with Quavo, “it went something like, “Jump jump, I don’t fuck with Donald Trump/I feel the Bern, feel the Bern – Bernie Sanders!” But once Bernie lost the primary, Quavo dropped the lyric.

6. Offset Spent Eight Months in Jail

During a 2015 concert at Georgia Southern, the band got themselves in a big mess when university and county police smelled marijuana emanating from the group’s vans. Twelve members of the entourage and the trio were arrested on guns, drugs and other crimes. Offset got eight months in jail. He was released after an Alford plea.

7. Influences

Takeoff’s favorite rapper is Kendrick Lamar, while Offset is a huge fan of fellow Georgia standout André 3000. Quavo has stated that JAY-Z is “the greatest rapper right now.”

8. Controversial New Album

Migos have a hit on their hands with Culture II, following 2017’s number one charting Culture. The controversy centers around the album’s length of 24 tracks and lasts for one hour and 45 minutes. Although some believe the 24 tracks were added for creative reasons, others think it had to do with how streaming has changed music. When a song is streamed, artists earn royalties. If an album has more songs, the artist can rack up more listens and more royalties, leading to higher rankings on the Billboard music charts. Some critics claimed that Migos was trying to “game the charts,” especially since most rap albums only last 50-60 minutes, with 11 to 15 tracks.
